SOPHIE GIBERT, THE ATLANTIC | The Strange, True, Tragicomic Story of EGOT and how a Miami Vice star and a 30 Rock writer made a nonsense acronym into the entertainment industry’s highest badge of honor is a cautionary tale involving pride, fame, pop-culture folklore, and the Internet. And like the best parables of stardom and naked ambition.

Last Friday, September 28, would have been Robert Wolders’ 82nd birthay. The Sunday Times remembers him:
When Robert Wolders first met Audrey Hepburn and invited her to dinner, she turned down his invitation, telling him that she had a night shoot for a film.“I thought it was her gentle way of rejecting me,” he recalled. In fact, her prior engagement on the set of Peter Bogdanovich’s rom-com They All Laughed was genuine and she was as interested in Wolders as he was in her. To his delight and surprise, she rang him the next day to ask him to join her for a drink at the Pierre hotel, facing Central Park in New York …

LtCol MICHAEL CHRISTY FOR TOGETHER WE SERVED VOICES | “That night, as Audrey slept, the Germans invaded Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The Dutch were totally shocked. They never dreamed Hitler would attack them, his “Dutch cousins.” Just the night before, Hitler had made a radio broadcast, promising to all who listened that he had no plans whatsoever of attacking Holland.” from this compellingly accurate biography on .

STEPHANIE ECKARDT FOR W MAGAZINE - It’s been 25 years since ’s death at 63, and yet each time you think you’ve seen every single image of her, it seems like another batch of throwbacks (and thereby, of course, dorm room decoration fodder) comes to light. The latest, taken by 20th-century photographers like and , comes courtesy of the exhibition “Audrey Hepburn: Beyond the Screen,” on view at in London from August 17 to September 30. While there’s no shortage of Hepburn at her finest, the show also gives a rare look into the three-year window of life she had pre-peak fame, between being scouted in 1950, shortly after her family left their native, then Germany-occupied Netherlands, and winning an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for her first starring role in Roman Holiday in 1953. Even in Bob Willoughby’s snapshot of Hepburn after her first official photo shoot that same year, shortly after filming wrapped, Hepburn looked in front of the camera.

RICHARD JAMES HAVIS FOR POST MAGAZINE - Although one critic described its plot as having “more holes than a kitchen colander” when it was released in 1967, Wait Until Dark remains a hugely enjoyable psychological thriller more than 50 years later. Director Terence Young focused on shocks and suspense rather than story and characters, and the result reportedly had terrified audiences jumping out of their seats. The film has aged well; its expert pacing and fearful setting make it extremely scary.

EVA WISEMAN FOR THE GUARDIAN - In 1958, was shooting Green Mansions, playing a woman in the Venezuelan jungle who is followed everywhere by a little fawn. In order to bond with Pippin the fawn (Hepburn called her Ip), she was encouraged to care for her, feeding her milk from a baby bottle. “I don’t have any children of my own,” she told a reporter on set, “but I’m learning a lot from Ip.” She took the deer to parties, and slept in bed with her.

In Malawi, the challenges faced by girl students in particular seem un-defeatable. Almost half of students don’t finish primary school. Girls face a disproportionate risk of acquiring HIV. Many are married or pregnant before age 18. And most, along with their families, live on less than USD per day. Despite all this, they have hope that, armed with an education, they will overcome the odds and achieve their dreams. A bicycle can help. By giving girl students a means of transportation, they are no longer constrained by long distances – to school, the health clinic or past the risks that await them on the roads. That’s why World Bicycle Relief, though the Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program (BEEP), distributes 70% of Buffalo Bicycles to girl students.
